Came from Instagram? Here’s what’s happening in the MCP world in 2 minutes

Most MCP servers work one day and vanish the next. ROKMCP measures them second by second. Here’s the story behind the charts you saw on social.

Hi! If you landed here from an Instagram Reel or a TikTok video, you probably saw one of these charts: colorful strips showing hundreds of servers as live/dead, or a headline like “93% of servers are behind an authentication wall.” This post explains exactly that in 2 minutes.

What even is MCP, and why should I care?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how AI agents connect to tools in the outside world — your calendar, a database, a payment system. It’s the shared language an assistant like ChatGPT or Claude speaks to “do things on your behalf.” In the past year, thousands of MCP servers have appeared.

Here’s the problem: most of these servers are experimental. Someone ships one today and shuts it down tomorrow. Some never respond, some only open with a specific key, and some still speak an old protocol. When you want to build an agent, knowing which server you can trust is nearly impossible.

What exactly does ROKMCP do?

We continuously probe these thousands of servers — connecting to each one at regular intervals and measuring:

  • Is it up and responding? (uptime)
  • How fast does it answer? (latency)
  • Which protocol era does it speak: modern or legacy?
  • Is the tool schema valid — can an agent actually use it?
  • Does it require authentication, and if so, how?

We accumulate all of this over time. So it’s not a single snapshot but a film: you can see how a server behaves across weeks.

So what was that chart you saw on social?

It was probably one of these three: (1) the ecosystem’s live/dead distribution — the instant health of thousands of servers; (2) “era transitions” — the migration curve of servers from old protocol to new; (3) a single server’s report card — uptime percentage, response time, and a “readability score” showing how easily an AI can read it.

In short: we take the pulse of the MCP ecosystem. Which server actually works, which one just claims to — we measure it, you see it.

What should you do now?

  1. Open the live dashboard on the home page — see the ecosystem’s current state.
  2. Search for a server you’re curious about and check its report card.
  3. If you have your own MCP server, add it to the list; we’ll start measuring it.
